Bear Hollow Farms

Meet George and Valerie

Meet George & Valerie

George and Valerie Bear purchased the farm they have named "Bear Hollow" in the fall of 1993. The farm was previously called Sowillo Hollow and so it was easy to change the sign they still had hanging out front. Valerie had such fond memories of picking blueberries earlier in life that the blueberry farm had quite an appeal. The farm was in need of a lot of repairs and required some hard work. Many years later they still wonder why they chose it, but come blueberry season it is all quite evident.

The farm had not been open to U-Pick before, so George and Valerie started putting signs out. Fifteen years later, they enjoy seeing the families return each year, their children growing up, and everyone so anxious to fill their freezers with blueberries.

Sowillow Hollow was a Certified Organic Farm selling to local businesses. The Bear's have continued to grow without using any chemicals on the bluberries, although they did not keep the certification. One of the big attractions to Bear Hollow Blueberries is the "No Spray" policy.

The Bear's love the face to face contact with their loyal customers. They love to entertain and share their beautiful farm with other folks who appreciate and enjoy visiting Bear Hollow.

George is the horticulturist behind much of what you see at Bear Hollow. He and Valerie can always be found starting (and not always finishing) some project somewhere on their five acres. Their enjoyment of landscaping and love of growing plants and vegetables is pretty evident.

Valerie retired from Pacific Bell in 1991 and then worked as a real estate agent for 10 years before devoting all her time to the Bear Hollow Business. George still works full time as an area manager for fertilizer sales and works from home (allowing him to keep an eye on Valerie!)
