Savor the Seasons
The time is here and so many of us are looking at our food choices. Where did the food come from, how far away was it grown, how was it grown, what happened to it along the way?
Now is the perfect time to learn how to preserve your own food! Contact me if you are interested in taking my class, "Intro to Food Preservation".
The cost of food right now is becoming more and more critical to more and more of us, and the good new is we do have some choices and there is “Hope.” We can take charge, feel better about ourselves and our bodies, our neighbors in our communities, Mother Earth etc.
If there were a way for you to have more control over the quality and cost of food for yourself and your family would you be interested?
We are so fortunate to live in an agricultural area where we have access to so much food whether we grow our own or buy fresh, local, high quality foods grown in a sustainable manner. If you were to access these foods when they are “in season” and preserve them in a manner that fits your families needs and lifestyle, you have much more control about the food that goes into your mouth at a more reasonable cost.
Learning how to safely preserve food at home is easy and fun. It does take time, and yet that time is well worth it when in the depths of the winter dulldrums we can go to our pantries and pull out a jar of peaches or brandied cherries, ladling them into a bowl and spooning into the summer memories of picking and canning them.
We have control not only to buy high quality local food but to also have control about what is in that marinara sauce we so enjoy, or the jam we can adjust sugar content, or the no-salt jar of tomatoes, or the ….. We can manage the overplanting of corn we did this year because we could freeze or can the excess that we could not consume or give away!
My good friend Pam and I talk a lot about wasted food and how much we hate it! With a lot of good safety tips on food preservation you will feel empowered with control!
Not everyone wants to can peaches or tomatoes and so there ends their perceived need or Interest in preserving? However, haven’t you considered making your own food gifts? Or, hasn’t it always bothered you that you have a gorgeous grape arbor and most of the grapes go to the birds? Do your kids love blueberries but you can’t afford them in the store? (got to get it in there when I can!) Don’t feel alone.
Frequent comments:
- Oh canning, yeah I used to do it.
- I don’t have the time anymore.
- It scares me, I might poison my family!
- I don’t have any of the equipment, isn’t it expensive?
My mission is to pass along my passion of food preservation.
Join me and my friends this season to share a love of food preservation in small classes in a working kitchen on a working blueberry farm where you will learn some food practices that will enable you to take more control over the food you eat.
